Bluehost Review

Bluehost Review

Bluehost was launched in 2003 by Matt Heaton. Matt Heaton initially began to vision hosting a company to offer quality services, and this thought and vision began in 1996. Since then, Matt has created two web hosting firms before the inception of Bluehost.

Bluehost has always been the definition of quality hosting. Bluehost had its first iteration – Ocatch.com. With this, they provided web hosting services for free, and they became very quickly popular.

They offered a limited number of features to their customers. Then in 2003, they decided to change to Bluehost and started to offer their customers shared hosting packages.

Bluehost very quickly became popular due to their ability to provide economical plans. They provided their web hosting plans with CMS support. Bluehost has a very popular feature that is a single click WordPress installation.

Soon they began to learn from their customer’s appeal and started setting up a system that enables them to provide shared hosting packages by utilizing various pricing points.

This indeed was extremely unique because no matter who you are and what you plan to do, maybe you are an individual planning to begin your blog; or could be you’re wash compliance company that needs increased resources. Bluehost had a plan that would suit everyone’s budget and requirements.

The company was a leader in changing the market standards. They marketed unlimited bandwidth and storage to their customers.

Every company has certain marketing gimmicks, and this probably was one of theirs because, in reality, the solutions and features they provided are actually limited but were labelled as unlimited.

They did this in order to refer to bandwidth and space used by a conventional customer, especially if they were working on a typical website.

But overall, I think that Bluehost is definitely an amazing choice. They provide their customers with top-notch quality web hosting solutions at extremely reasonable rates, and they also offer good assistance to new signups.

There are not many companies that can level up with Bluehost, but there is definitely one host that comes close to them and can be looked at as an alternative is HostGator. Let’s take a quick look at a little history on Bluehost.

Bluehost

History

The company gained a lot of popularity on account of the unlimited storage that they would offer their customers. But if a user abuses the privileges offered by saving large amounts of information that was not pertaining to their website, then Bluehost was very prompt to place a limit on them.

This is also applicable to websites that use their site as a bulk emailing device and also customers that use their website to download or upload huge amounts of video files or audio files.

The reason why they followed this strategy of having flexible limits was to ensure the user on their shared server does not use resources that they do not require, and by doing so, it is detrimental to many other customers that share a similar server.

Over the years, we have noticed that Bluehost always updates and upgrades their plans, and in 2009, we have seen that they changed a few things in terms of their customer service. It was then that they decided to begin to limit the usage of steel for a couple of their clients.

The reason was very clear as these users had increased the demand and pressure on CPU resources. This, in turn, impacted various other clients that shared a similar server in a negative way.

So, as soon as they were done with the little survey that they conducted, it was very clear. Still, the website was soon to see restrictions on resources and sites that were downloading and uploading data were then asked to consider other web hosting plans instead of the shared ones.

Bluehost

Acquisition

Bluehost was bought in 2010 by Endurance International Group (EIG). The group was launched in 1997 and had its headquarters in Massachusetts. The best company had acquired multiple hosting companies. They always allow the acquired companies to continue working with their original name.

This can also mean that there could be a time that you are comparing two companies that involve Bluehost as well; you might be actually deciding between companies that might be owned by biosimilar parent companies.

Bluehost – an Independent Company

The EIG administers Bluehost, but Bluehost operates independently, so whenever you buy a package from Bluehost, you will be receiving services that are unique from Bluehost.

The services they offer reflect their extensive track record of reliability and providing their customers with exceptional service that is available at low prices.

They also provide their customers with multiple hosting options that also include shared hosting, dedicated hosting and VPS.

So, this is a little background about Bluehost just to help you have a gist about the company, the journey and service. We will also take a look at certain specifics about the multiple solutions that they provide and decide if their services are good for you or not.

Multiple Features we Like

Whenever we write a review, our main goal is to offer you a report with an unbiased opinion that states facts and figures about the host’s services.

We always ensure that reviews reflect the data from all our experiences and interactions that we may have had with the company.

All the data that we have recorded is compiled and presented with quantifiable metrics to help you determine the quality of all their service.

Uptime Percent

In the recent past, Bluehost made some serious changes to the service, and their customers have noticed a drastic improvement in the uptimes that they offer.

Today their uptimes are more than 99.99%. Over the last 10 months (7296 hours), Bluehost has had just five outages, and this amounted to an overall downtime of nine minutes.

Some years ago, Bluehost had experienced a DDoS attack, and this had a major effect on their downtime.

But as we looked at the service from December 2019 to September 2020, we have experienced uptimes only twice that were not 100%. During the ten months, we received an average uptime of 99.99%.

Load Times

If any of you while using Bluehost have even had a look at their services in 2016, you would have seen their speeds were not so great. Back then, the speeds that they offered were approximately at an average of 1500 ms. With these load times, they could not make it to the top 10 in terms of fast loading times.

This year (2021), we have seen phenomenal improvement, as their load times have drastically improved. Bluehost today offers load times at an average of 424 Ms.

With these load times, they have earned their way and secured a spot among the top five on the list of fastest in the market.

In one of the interviews, they were asked how did this change came about, and Bluehost’s representative replied that it was an initiative taken up by the team to improve their customers’ experience.

In order to accomplish the goal, they invested in the server park – BlueRock. And this was a good decision as it reflects in the results they achieved.

Over the testing period of 10 months, we received an average speed of 399 Ms while the slowest speed we experience was at an average of 467 Ms I would say they offer their customers lightning-fast speeds.

Cheap Prices

When Bluehost initially began, many users were very sceptical about using their services. Many users even complained about the services being very expensive, and they did not offer that additional feature that would make the package worthwhile.

But over the years, Bluehost has impressed the market, and especially in 2021 their impressive loading times and uptimes have surprised everyone.

Along with these exceptional features, they also tried these services at an economical price. We could also turn them to be as one of the less expensive hostings in the market.

Bluehost offer their customers an introductory plan for a monthly price of $2.95, and this will also depend on the various promotional offers that you may find. I also agree that there are a couple of posts in the market that offer cheaper plans than Bluehost.

But, given the prices, the improved servers and customer support definitely add value for your money.

The customer support service is way better in comparison to the average hosts in the market. SiteGround is the only host that we consider as a worthy competitor in terms of customer service. Bluehost is good and offers great value; however, they do not qualify for our list of cheap hosts.

Security Features

Today we read off various data breaches and cyberattacks that are happening all over the world. For this reason, we are totally happy that Bluehost has plenty of amazing security options. Bluehost also has various tools to handle common risks and attacks.

These tools are specifically created for this purpose. For instance, you can now avert spamming with the help of SpamAssassin, Spam Hammer and Spam Experts. Cloudflare is also very useful and keeps your site safe from DDoS attacks.

Suppose your website has quality content on it; it will be at high risk as there would be people wanting to steal that content from the site. For this reason, Bluehost provides hotlink protection; this keeps such people away and makes it extremely difficult for them to steal your content and images.

You can also utilize the various filters that are made available. These filters will help you to block out certain email accounts. Bluehost also provides you with an option to block any IP address. Plenty of bonus features are made available by Bluehost; however, we have also noticed that GoDaddy also does the same.

Your directories can now be password protected, and you will also be able to activate two factor authentication, create a menu, a blacklist for all IP addresses; you can also utilize oak validation. Bluehost is well equipped to protect your website and your visitors.

But always remember that the privacy protection is a chargeable feature. However, there are other companies that would not charge you for the same, like Namecheap. This will definitely help you to save up on money as much as $20 to $50 annually.

Refund Policy

The company guarantees their clients a 30-day money back. So at any point in time, you wish to discontinue this service, you can inform them. To avail of this money-back guarantee, you must inform Bluehost within the initial 30 days from subscription.

If you fail to cancel within the stipulated time, you will not receive a refund, not even on a prorated basis. Also, the domain charges will not be refunded.

User Friendly

Bluehost has worked extremely hard to ensure setting up is a very simple and quick process for their customers. Bluehost has made even managing the website simple. They offer an interface with the enhanced cPanel making it extremely easy to use. All you need to do is click on the icon, and you will reach your destination.

With the help of the cPanel, you can handle various things, including email addresses and various elements on the website, from a single location.

You can also customize the entire layout of the panel in order to fit your requirement. You can also edit various things and only keep the features that you use regularly.

WordPress.org Recommended

While choosing a host, you must always invest your time in researching and learning various figures and facts about that particular host. With regards to Bluehost, one of the facts is that WordPress has officially recommended Bluehost. For those of you that don’t know much about WordPress, they are the biggest content management system across the globe. It powers millions of sites.

So, with WordPress recommending Bluehost, it means that we should look at this host closely. WordPress would not just simply stick their necks out for a host if they were average or even low average hosts. Recently we heard that WordPress had made a list with the names of their favourite hosts.

The list they created had only three hosts on it, and Bluehost featured on the list. So far, I have mentioned a couple of things that we really like about Bluehost. One more detail that I would like to mention is the features they offer with regard to ecommerce. This feature makes it very easy to set up an E-commerce store.

Things they can do Better

In order to give you an honest review on Bluehost, simply mentioning their strengths will not give you clarity. You will be able to make an informed decision once you learn of the weaknesses too.

Customer Support

The company does plenty of things the correct way, and over the years, we have seen an improvement in terms of the quality that they provide.

But, if ever you have an issue and need to connect with an executive, you can have alot of expectations from their support service.

We have also learned of certain clients that have connected with their customer support team and received phenomenal assistance. These users have also shared their positive experiences.

There have also been complaints, and the company encourages their clients to connect with them through their phone support as well. But, many users have reported that they have had trouble connecting with an executive even after making multiple calls.

However, if you compare the services that Bluehost offers with the average cost in the market, you will realize that they are not the worst in terms of customer support; however, they do have room for improvement. If you require handholding support, then I would strongly recommend that you should try SiteGround.

Site Migrations

We have reviewed multiple hosts, and plenty of them offer the service for site migration at no extra cost. They also have a team of experts that would help you to move your site from your current host onto their servers. And truth be told, for these companies, the entire process is very simple, and it also implies that you will be their client for at least a couple of years.

Bluehost doesn’t look at things in the same way; I don’t know why. This service is chargeable, and their customers end up paying $150 for this service that many other hosts conduct for free. If this hasn’t frustrated you yet, then getting Bluehost will transfer twenty email accounts and a maximum of five websites.

And if you are a person with that extra bit of patience, then let me tell you that you will also need to pay an additional charge of $80 for an introductory walkthrough service which is for 45 minutes. I know of many hosts that offer this particular service to their clients happily and, most importantly, 100% free of charge.

Let’s take a quick look at the Pricing and Plans that Bluehost offers;

Bluehost provides their customers with five hosting packages, they are;

  • Shared hosting
  • WordPress hosting
  • Cloud sites
  • Dedicated hosting
  • VPS hosting

Many users find shared hosting packages sufficient and meet all their requirements. If you’re just starting and the traffic to your site is not predictable in such a case, shared hosting most of the time suffices. And if you look at dedicated hosting, it is nothing but simply leasing a physical server. WordPress hosting is specially optimized for WP users.

Final Thoughts

Bluehost is excellent for entrepreneurs that are just starting off. Bluehost has been around for a while now and has plenty of experience and an excellent reputation to back them up. The economical pricing and high-quality solutions are the reason why we recommend Bluehost to anyone and everyone. For multiple exciting features and many extras too.

If you have researched enough, the common impression that users have about Bluehost is very similar to our review, making them extremely popular. However, we do hope that they take into consideration offering their clients with the service of site migration at no extra charges. But apart from this, I think Bluehost is an excellent choice for our web hosting company, and hence they have made it on our list. You can also check our article on CloudWays review.
